Phoebe and Cole's Hotel Room at The Arms

As promised, after the visit to Angelus, Phoebe had gone to The Arms to get her and Cole a room. As much as she really did adore Xander and Bridge, she didn't want to impose on Xander as his apartment was getting pretty crowded.

Cole didn't want her going out unless she was with him or Anders because he still felt that Angelus was a danger -- even if he was behind bars right now.

So, this was Phoebe, pacing her hotel room.

"He said you were sleeping with Veronica," Bel said, because, yay, diversion! "But I didn't believe him."

Anders stepped back, the better to convey his utter and complete incredulity. "Oh, that is so incredibly frakking evil . . . and ridiculous, so you're dodging the question."

"No, he really said it!" Bel protested. "He said he smelled you on Veronica and I told him he had to be mistaken because there was no way. I don't know why he did it, guess he wanted me to be pissed off at you and Veronica or something."

Anders crossed his arms over his chest. "You can't tell me that was the only think he said to mess with your mind, but . . ." Okay, he had to know. "Did you think even for a second he might've been right?"

"No!" Bel said. "I mean, you guys hate each other. And I know you wouldn't do that."

Anders brushed his knuckles lightly against Bel's cheek. "Will you tell me eventually?"

"Tell you what?" Bel asked, feigning cluelessness.

Anders sighed and poked him in the ribs again. "Are you being a pain in my ass tonight because you hope it'll make me feel better?"

"If there's pain then I'm not doing it right," Bel said. Evasive? Nah.

"Dork," Anders said, poking him in the stomach this time. "Look, if you don't want to talk about it this week it's okay. I just . . . I'm here for you, you know that."

"I know," Bel said quietly. "He just messed with my head, that's all. I should've known it wasn't really Angel."

"You're my demon," Anders said forcefully. "Mine and Phoebe's. He doesn't get to frak with you like that."

"He pretended to have feelings for me," Bel admitted. "But he really thinks I'm just pathetic." And that still stung.

That coaxed a tiny growl from Anders's throat, and he narrowed his eyes. "Bullshit," he said, but he wrapped his arms around Bel again; he could tell that had hurt. "Am I gonna have to prove to you how not-pathetic you are?"

"Just kinda hard to believe that I used to want almost nothing more than his respect," Bel said, shrugging his shoulders. "And I never had it."

"From Angelus?" Anders wanted to snort, but he rested his forehead against Bel's instead. "I think . . . it's pretty safe to say Phoebe and I are better off for that."

Bel was still tense. "I wanted to be just like him," he said softly.

Anders kissed him lightly. "Yeah, well . . . back when all that was happening I was still a clueless, scared little kid. Just to give you some perspective. And you're not that guy any more."

"Yeah, I'm not," Bel agreed. "But it kinda scares me how close I came to that."

"It scares me, and I only found out about all this afterward," Anders told him. "Hey . . . you know better now. We believe in you, and I'm gonna kick your ass if you start to doubt that."

Bel raised an eyebrow. "Like you could," he snorted.

"In this situation?" Anders tapped him lightly on the nose. "Bet your ass I'd figure out how."

"Bet your ass you couldn't," Bel growled.

"Oh really?" drawled Anders, squirming just a little bit closer, because mmm, growly demon. "What are you gonna do to it if I win the bet?"
