After the meeting with Spider, Phoebe left the Journalism classroom, she hadn't really been surprised to see Cole waiting for her across the hall. She went gratefully into his arms and held him with a sigh. The meeting hadn't been as bad as she had expected -- but it hadn't really been pleasant, either.

It had been all business, with no banter between her and Krycek and Jake at all. In fact, they had barely spoken to her. It had been more painful than she had imagined it could be. The fact that she had been cut cold by the two people she had once considered her closest friends made her chest tighten up enough that it hurt to breathe.

It hurt, gods it hurt.

She laid her head on his chest and tried to focus on the comfort that she knew he would give.

"Everything okay?" Cole said, squeezing her tightly. He could already tell the answer, though.

"It hurts," she whispered. "They were my friends once."

"I know," he said, stroking her hair. And if it were up to me I'd send them screaming to hell for hurting you. "You need to walk away from all this. Just put it behind you. You know who your real friends are."

Phoebe smiles. "Krycek suggested that the Ethics class should sit in on some of the Journalism classes and give their input."

Cole snorted. "I'll give him some input right now," he muttered.

He looked at Phoebe and his expression softened. "I got you a present," he said, "since you've been having such a rough time lately." He reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out a small white box and handed it to her.

Phoebe opened the box and her expression melted into one of love.

"Cole...it's beautiful." She leaned up and kissed him. "I love you. Thank you..."

Cole reached into the box and pulled out the choker, fastening it around her neck. His fingers brushed the stone in the center. "Moonstone," he said. "Phoebe being a goddess of the moon and all. And it's supposed to bring good luck." He grinned and added, reciting from memory, "'It is said if you give your lover a moonstone necklace you will always have passion with each other.'"

Phoebe reached up and touched his face, just looking into his eyes for a long moment. "I believe it."

Cole bent his head and kissed her, then drew back with a sigh. "Parents Weekend is going to suck so much," he said grumpily.

"I wish we didn't have to be here for it," she said softly.

"It's only a couple days at least," he said. "And as soon as our respective relatives are gone, we'll make it up to each other."

Phoebe nodded.

"That we will."
