Tuesday Night, Suite 518/520 -- Confused and Upset

After hanging up on Piper, Phoebe returned to her and Cole's room. She had already planned to stay with Lana again tonight, but she needed to duck out of her friend's sight while she struggled to get herself under control. She didn't want Lana to see her in tears, so she went to her own room to pick up some materials for her class tomorrow.

Once in the room, however, Phoebe sat down on the couch and buried her face in her hands, trying to stop the tears from coming. Piper thought Cole killed someone... killed a witch. She didn't trust him.

What hell had Cole done? Why had he thrown a fireball at her sister?!

This just kept getting worse and worse.

Much much later, Cole staggered into the suite, smelling strongly of whiskey. He tried to carefully make his way through the living area, but accidentally knocked over a lamp. Oops.

Phoebe looked up at him when she heard the lamp crsh. She had been crying. "Cole." She wrinkled her nose when she smelled the whiskey. "Ugh."

"Hi, sweetheart," Cole slurred, tumbling on to the couch.

Phoebe sighed, wiping her eyes.

"You're drunk," she said softly, pointing out the obvious.

Cole reached for Phoebe and tried to pull her against him. "Maybe just a little," he giggled.

Phoebe stopped him from pulling her against him, but she didn't move away. "Have fun?"

Cole pouted and made grabby motions at his girlfriend. "C'mere!" he demanded petulantly. "Wanna snuggle."

This would have seemed very cute to Phoebe if she wasn't so upset.

"We can snuggle after you tell me why you tried to kill my sister," she said softly.

Well, that was sobering.

"Didn't want to kill her!" he protested.

"Then why throw a fireball at her?"

[demonbelthazor]

"I didn't!" Cole denied lamely. "I threw it...near her."

[sensethevisions]

"Cole... you almost killed her." She looked into his face. "Why did you throw a fireball at my sister?"

"I knew the amulet would protect her!" Cole said. "I knew it wouldn't hurt her."

"You were positive that she would be protected by the amulet? No room for doubt?" She gazed at him. "That doesn't answer the why..."

"I had to make it look good," Cole said, burying his face in his hands. "Vornac was right there, and if he told Raynor I didn't do my best to get the amulet...."

She had thought something like that might have happened.

"He would have killed you..."

[demonbelthazor]

"Or destroyed my father's soul," Cole said softly.

Phoebe lay a hand against his cheek. "We have to find a way to get your father's soul free from him and out of danger."

"But in the meantime I gotta do what Raynor wants," Cole said miserably.

"Including kill us?"

[demonbelthazor]

Cole looked at Phoebe in horror. "I won't do that!" he swore.

[sensethevisions]

"I have faith in that... but do you?" She sighed softly. "I'm not afraid of you, I never will be. But I know that he's going to keep pushing you and the stakes are going to get higher. You said yourself, he knows about me now... knows what I am and who I am. He also has the one thing guaranteed to get you to do anything he wants, love."

"I won't hurt you, I promise," Cole said fervently. "He can't get me to do that."

"I know. But he will try unless we find a way for you to stand against him. He holds the one thing in the world that can get you to second guess everything." She swallowed. "Piper thinks I'm in danger... she's really upset and worried about me being here... with you"

"I don't blame her," Cole murmured, looking down.

Phoebe just stared at him. "I do."

[demonbelthazor]

Cole blinked. "You don't think she's right to be worried about you?"

[sensethevisions]

"Not when I'm with you, no."

[demonbelthazor]

"You have too much faith in me," Cole said quietly.

[sensethevisions]

Phoebe refused to let him see how much that hurt.

"You've proven yourself over and over to me, Cole," she said softly. "I have faith in you because you ahve earned it."

"I don't wanna think about this anymore," Cole mumbled. "Can we go to bed?"

Phoebe sighed. "Not thinking about it isn't going to make it go away, love." She leaned over and kissed him. "Get some sleep or else you'll have a hell of a hangover tomorrow."

Not caring he was still on the couch, Cole tried to pull Phoebe down against him to snuggle to sleep.

Phoebe snuggled against him. She'd stay until he fell asleep.

And indeed very soon Cole passed out in a drunken stupor.

Phoebe sat there with him for a very long time, just holding him while he slept. Finally, she kissed him and left the room to go check on Lana.
