Sunday Afternoon

Phoebe had once again decided that hiding in her room was a good idea for now. She spent a great deal of time pretending to be studying one of the texts for Aziraphale's class. Her hair draped over the book and her pretending to have her face buried quite seriously in her work made for the ease of avoidance.

She planned to make phone calls to everyone else who had been involved in the park event last night a little later to see if everyone was alright --- and if River was okay.

However, first, she needed to break the news to Cole about what had happened... and wondered if it was too early in the year to hide behind a mask..?

Cole finally caught up with Phoebe Sunday afternoon when he found her studying for Phale's class. He came up beside her and kissed her temple. "Hey, sweetheart," he said.

Phoebe leaned into him. "Hello, love. How was your night?"

She was still looking down into the book.

"It was okay," he said evasively. "How was yours?"

"That's good," she murmured. "I'm glad you had a good time." She nodded. "Mine?" she faltered. "Oh, mine was pretty uneventful ifyoudon'tcountthefightinthepark."

Cole blinked. "What did you say?"

Phoebe bit her lip.

"My night was pretty uneventful?"

"Look at me, Phoebe," Cole said.

Phoebe raised her face slowly to look at him.

"What the hell. . . ?" Cole said angrily. "Who did this to you? Why didn't you tell me?"

Phoebe bit her lip. "I didn't want to upset you..."

"Who?" Cole said, a single deadly syllable.

Phoebe quickly reached for his hands, which caused her to wince as bruises protested.

"Love... she didn't mean to hurt me... she was in a panic."

"Who?!" he demanded.

She flinched slightly at the tone, but held onto his arms still.

"River..." she said reluctantly.

"I'm gonna fucking kill her," Cole growled.

Phoebe would have flailed if she had let go of his arms.

"Why would you want to kill her?"

"First she tried to read my mind, now she's hurt you," Cole said. "Time to teach her a lesson."

"No!" Phoebe said firmly, almost pleadingly. "No killing! River is a human and you can't kill her just because she hurt me." She shook her head. "River would never purposefully hurt me. There was something... scattered about her last night."

"She's fucking psychotic," Cole grumbled, calming just a little.

Phoebe pulled his arms around her, holding them there.

"There is something different about her, I know, but she is... she's an innocent... sorta."

"Then I won't hurt her," Cole said. "Now. But if she touches you again. . . ."

She tightened her arms around him.

"She won't." She said softly. "She won't hurt me."

"I'll make sure of it," Cole growled.

"I'm really okay, love," she tried to assure him. "I just have a black eye and a busted lip... those were the worst of my injuries. The bruises on my stomach aren't nearly as bad as they look and River is the one who ended up in the clinic."

"I'm still going to have a few words with her," Cole said, looking Phoebe over again.

Phoebe *headchested* against Cole. There were times when she knew that arguing the point with him was useless. One of those times was when he was feeling protective.

"It could have been so much worse, love," she tried pointing out logically.

"Then she'd be dead now," he growled.

That would be Phoebe *headchesting* again.

"I love you."

"I love you, too, sweetheart," he said, kissing her, mindful of her split lip.

"Cally said I should get you to kiss my bruises to make them better."

"Cally's a wise woman," Cole said, tenderly kissing her bruises.

"Yes, yes she is," Phoebe said, giving him better access.

He placed a gentle kiss on her purpled eyelid. "How about inviting her for a threesome? You should be in bed resting if you're hurt," he pointed out.

"I wonder if she'd accept? I didn't want to be in bed alone."

"I'm here now, and I'm not going anywhere," Cole said.

Phoebe nodded. "Alright, love. If you're staying, then I'll rest if it'll make you feel better."

"It will," he said. "And you should go to the clinic, too."

"Sweetheart, I don't need to go to the clinic," she said. "I was punched in the face and in the stomach. I wasn't seriously injured."

"I just want to be sure," he said, guiding her toward the bedroom.

Phoebe walked with him into the bedroom. "You worry roo much," she said with a smile.

"And you don't?" he countered.

[sensethevisions]

"I didn't say that," she grinned. "I'm very over-protective of you."

He drew her down on the bed. "Then protect me over here," he said.

Phoebe nodded. "I can do that," she murmured, getting comfortable on the bed.

He snuggled up next to her, carefully wrapping his arms around her. "Love you," he said.

Phoebe smiled and lay her head on his chest. "I love you, too."
