Wednesday Morning, 518/520

Phoebe had passed another sleepless night. It just wasn't easy for her to fall asleep or even stay asleep right now unless she had been drinking for awhile. She had thought about going to the clinic for help, but she wasn't even sure what she would tell them.

She went into the kitchen to start making coffee -- of the extra-strong variety. Caffeine was guaranteed to help her have at least some focus during the day right now. She closed her eyes and leaned against the counter as she waited for the coffee to finish brewing.

One of these days, she would start to feel better, right?

It had taken a few days, but Marie finally steeled herself and headed down the hall to knock on Phoebe's door.

"It's open."

Marie opened the door slowly. "Hey, Phoebe, it's Marie."

Phoebe looked over at the door. "Hey, Marie, come on in."

Taking a deep breath, Marie entered the room and closed the door behind her.

"I... um... Lana told me what happened. I'm sorry I didn't stop by sooner."

Phoebe swallowed. "That's alright." She forced a smile. "This is actually the most functional that I have been since I got back."

"Is there anything I can do?" Marie asked.

Phoebe looked up. "Nothing much more to ask than to bear with my moroseness ss I work through the missing him like crazy part?"

"I can definitely do that," Marie assured her, going to sit near here. "I just can't believe it."

"Niether can I... and I was not only there, but I helped do it," She sighed, looking down. "How much did Lana tell you?"

"She told me that he was possessed by something evil and hurting people and the only way to stop the evil ended up killing him, too," Marie said.

Phoebe nodded. "Pretty much. My sisters and I had to vanquish The Source of All Evil...and he took Cole with him."

"I... just don't have any words," Marie said. "I wish I had known, maybe I could have helped somehow."

Phoebe gave her a watery smile. "The Source was hurting anyone that had any clue that he wasn't acting completely like Cole, Marie. He was hurting and attacking people and then he and I went to the Underworld."

Marie looked over Phoebe carefully. "Did he hurt you physically?"

Phoebe laughed humourlessly. "No. Surprisingly, he never did. Just fed me a tonic that was meant to bring what he called my true nature out and turn me evil."

"Phoebe, you are the least evil person I know," Marie said. "He was totally manipulating you."

"I appreciate that, Marie, but... he did have me believing that he was right about that. Fortunately for me, I had people who were convinced othherwise and came to the Underworld to get me back."

"I would have been there if I had known," Marie said.

"I know you would have," Phoebe said with a slight smile. She was silent for a long moment and then looked up. "Can I get you to please do me a favor?"

"Whatever you need," Marie said.

"Could you tell Buffy for me that I can't make the competition? I'm in no shape to be responsible for catching our flyer when I keep going back to the fact that he'ss gone..."

"Sure, don't worry about it," Marie said. "The last thing you need is to be around a bunch of perky, super happy people. You might have to beat them up."

Marie might have just caused Phoebe to give the first grin she's shown in days. "Yeah and that would do wonders for our standing against the other teams."

Marie gave her an encouraging smile. "Especially because we'd all have to jump in. And you know that our squad will be the toughest one there."

"No one wants to mess with the Fandom Gremlin Cheerleaders," Phoebe agreed.

"Exactly," Marie smiled. "And that means you have the support of the squad to get through this."

Phoebe nodded and then let out a breath. "Thank you, Marie. I ahve a feeling I'm going to need that."
