South Attic -- Friday Morning

Since Phoebe's only class had been cancelled for the day, she was hanging out in the attic and just relaxing. She was looking forward to the trip to England and some time away from here to spend with Cole.

She was relaxing on the couch, watching TV with the sound turned down so she didn't disturb Cole, whom she thought was still sleeping.

Lana knocked quietly on the door. "Phoebe?"

Phoebe got up and let Lana in. "Hey hun."

Lana gives her a hug. "Did you read the email? Parker's found a way to make all this stupid stuff stop. Thank God!"

Phoebe hugged her back and nodded.

"Yes, and I am going to beat the hell out of Logan for putting you guys through all of this."

"You'll probably have to stand in line. I think Shep's about ready to pound him into next week." Lana smiles. "I'm just so glad it's going to be over! And I'm so glad that Forensics was cancelled. Though, she could have told us earlier so we'd have known we had the day free!"

"I'll wait in line behind Shep," Phoebe agreed. "I know! A free Friday! So what are you doing over break?"

"I don't know. Shep and I have both been so busy and things have been so crazy this past week... We really haven't talked about it. Maybe I'll go back to Smallville for a few days, but mostly I'd like to steal some time to just be with him, you know?"

Lana sighed. "As long as he doesn't get called away again."

"I wish you guys were going on the England trip with Cole and I."

"Yeah... we just didn't get around to making plans to go."

Lana hesitates. "Phoebe, can I tell you something? Something I haven't even told Shep yet?"

Phoebe looks at her. "Of course!"

Lana sits down and curls herself up into a tight ball on the couch.

"When I was home over Christmas break I found some old pictures of my parents. And one whole set was my mom and a man I didn't recognize."

She takes a deep breath and looks down, "So, Lex did a little checking for me and found out that my parents had separated for a while just before my mom got pregnant with me and... long story short? The guy I thought was my father isn't."

Phoebe sits down next to Lana and puts an arm around her friend.

"Oh... oh, Lana..." Phoebe says softly. "I wish I knew what to say. Are you... are you planning to try and find this other guy?"

Phoebe has never known her own father, so she can only imagine how devastating this must be for her friend. "How can I help?"

"I did," she said blithely crushing a few months of canon together. "He... he finally agreed to talk to me and be tested and we exchanged emails and all. But... his wife can't handle it, so he's decided he can't have anything to do with me."

Okay, Daddy abandonment. This is something Phoebe is way too familiar with.

"He what?" Phoebe demands softly as her eyes flash angrily. "So, just like that, he's shutting you out? His wife cannot handle that he has a daughter, so he's..."

Phoebe hugs her friend. "Want me to vanquish them," she offers only half-kidding.

"I told him it was okay," Lana says managing a crooked smile. "Told him his wife and family had to come first. I'm just a... bastard daughter that he never knew about or wanted. I'm not going to be responsible for wrecking his life."

She maintained the facade for another moment then her face crumpled. "This is what always happens," she said. "God, there has to be something so wrong with me."

At this point, Phoebe really wishes she could blow things up like Piper can. Because, making Lana cry and feel like this? That's just not something Phoebe can accept or forgive.

She tightens her arms around Lana and rocks her gently. "There's nothing wrong with you, Lana, nothing at all. These people... people are shit. You are a bright, beautiful, loving person, Lana."

See that look? That's the beginnings of a vengeance plot. She'll have to read Inferno again and may need to talk to Kiki.

"They leave, they go away... No one wants me enough to stay with me. Except Clark, who lies to me about everything," Lana said bitterly.

"And Shep, who... God, I totally lost it with him - had this crazy melt-down after the auditions for the play. But he's so good to me. And, God, I haven't even told him any of this.

"I wanted to wait, tell him about Henry when we'd worked things out. But then I got an email from his wife telling me Henry was free to do what he wanted, but she wanted nothing to do with me and if he wanted to choose me over her then she'd just leave him."

She looked up at Phoebe tearfully, "I couldn't let that happen. They'd been happy before I showed up. He loves her."

Oh yeah, slow, torturous vengeance.

"I don't understand why she's being such a bitch." Phoebe admits. "It doesn't make sense that any person with a heart or a soul would try to make a man choose between her and his daughter. She sounds like a tyrant." She strokes her friend's hair. I don't know anything about Clark, but I know that I can name four people right off the top of my head who want you and would hate to see you leave or disappear from their lives." She smiles and starts ticking people off on her fingers. "Shep, Me, Kiki and Cole."

"And Maia," Lana says quietly. "Who ran into me at the gym just after I got the email. Nobody knows about this but you yet."

She rested her head on Phoebe's shoulder. "I don't know how to tell Shep. I wasn't trying to hide it from him. I was just excited and wanted to wait to tell him when it was all worked out - but now..."

She looked up at Phoebe. "Thank you for being such a good friend. I didn't know who else to come to with this."

"Yes, my little sister, she loves you as much as we do."

Phoebe held Lana. "Shep will understand. If he can forgive me for the wedding debacle? He'll understand that you wanted to tell him all of the details when they were worked out. I guarantee he'll be more concerned about you than the fact you hadn't told him yet."

She smiles. "Anytime, Lana. I'm always here for you."
